last day in roma

Today I went to school. Not ordinary school - Gladiator School! We did history of the gladiators, learnt combat and did fitness. I learnt that at the start of the Roman Empire they had 50 legions (each has 5,000 men) and at the end, they had 28. They had lots of weapons, such as swords, spears, and special things that looked like porcupines that they would throw on the ground and would spike the enemy's feet.  At Gladiator School, if you didn't do something right, you had to do five push ups!

At night we went to the Colosseum. First we went and had a look around town seeing other Roman ruins, like the place where Julius Ceasar was killed and a 2,000 year old shopping mall! There were plenty of statues.  Apparently there used to be more, but the ones made of metal got melted down to be used for weapons  - just the marble ones are left!

Travelers tips: Wear comfortable shoes on holiday - you do a lot of walking! But even if it hurts a bit, walking is better than a car because you see more detail.

  1. (This is Navina.) Thank you for sharing your blog, Adam. Peter and I lived near Rome some 30 years ago - before we came to NZ - and reading about your experiences and seeing your photos brings back lovely memories. Italians are marvellous cooks, don't you think?
Gladiator school sounds great! You must be learning heaps. Looking forward to your next post. Love to Joshua and your parents. Arrivederci!
